Overview
Mount Besar, also widely known as Mount Halau-Halau, stands as the highest peak in South Kalimantan, towering at approximately 1,901 meters above sea level. It is located in the Meratus Mountains, a range that cuts through the heart of South Kalimantan from north to south. Known for its rich biodiversity, cool air, and scenic trekking trails, Mount Halau-Halau has become a prime destination for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and trekkers from across Indonesia.
The mountain sits near the border between Hulu Sungai Tengah and Hulu Sungai Selatan Regencies, and is part of the protected Meratus Geopark area. It is especially sacred to the indigenous Dayak Meratus community, who have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

1. Lush Tropical Forest
The trek to the summit takes you through thick secondary and primary forests filled with tropical trees, wild orchids, and exotic birds. It’s a living museum of South Kalimantan’s flora and fauna.
2. Panoramic Views
From the top, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Meratus range, mist-covered valleys, and distant rivers. The early morning sunrise from the peak is a magical experience.

How to Get to Mount Halau-Halau
1. Arrive in Banjarmasin
- Nearest Airport: Syamsudin Noor International Airport (BDJ) in Banjarmasin.
- From Jakarta, Surabaya, or Balikpapan, multiple flights land daily.
2. Travel to Loksado or Batu Kambar (Starting Points)
There are two main trekking routes:
A. Via Loksado (Hulu Sungai Selatan)
- Travel Time: ~5–6 hours from Banjarmasin by car
- Route: Banjarmasin → Kandangan → Loksado
- Loksado is a well-known eco-tourism village. From here, the trail to Mount Halau-Halau is longer but more scenic.
- Facilities: Homestays and local guides are available.
B. Via Batu Kambar Village (Hulu Sungai Tengah)
- Travel Time: ~6 hours by car from Banjarmasin
- Route: Banjarmasin → Barabai → Hantakan → Batu Kambar
- This is the most direct and popular route for hikers.
- Trekkers often hire local guides from Batu Kambar for the journey.

- Campsites are located along the trail, with basic shelters available at some points.
